Course Description

This course is offered to mental health practitioners (including social workers, counselors, psychotherapists and other licensed behavioral practitioners) who seek broader skills in working with people of diverse religious and spiritual orientations. Rather than focusing exclusively on therapeutic modalities and avoiding conversations about the soul, the mysteries of the universe and a patient's orientation towards God, we seek in this course to develop the concrete skills necessary to demonstrate comfort in conversing about these matters, especially as they impact a sense of meaning and purpose in life. The course puts forth the notion that a strict separation between psychotherapy and spiritual practice or religion, is unnecessary and can and should be overcome within a truly integrative mental health framework. Examples of cases and concrete skills in dealing with various situations, including the use of relevant assessment tools, are discussed.

Course Learning Objectives
After attending this course, participants will be able to:

1) Demonstrate awareness and be able to describe the differing religious and spiritual orientations relevant to New Mexico (and the greater southwest in particular) that clients may bring into sessions, especially as relates to the relationship of various belief systems to mental health.

2) Develop familiarity with and be able to identify and explain concrete skills in bridging the divide between modern therapeutic modalities and religious and spiritual orientations in a way that embraces complementarity rather than separateness.

3) Discover practical approaches to differentiating and integrating an understanding of various religious and spiritual orientations of the client within psychotherapeutic sessions, including through the use of relevant assessment tools.

4) Examine the challenge of relating religion and spirituality with traditional therapeutic modalities as part of a personal journey of growth for each therapist that can then be transferred to the client/therapist relationship.

Course Completion & CE Information

Course completion requirements: All attendees, including social workers and other behavior health practitioners, must attend the entire course and complete a course evaluation to be eligible for CE credit.

Course attendees must pass the post-test with 80% (in 3 attempts) to be eligible for CE credit.

Certificates of completion will be emailed within 10 business days of course completion.

Working with Diverse Faith & Spiritual Orientations in Psychotherapy, is approved by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program, to be offered by Psychotherapy & Pastoral Counseling Associates, LLC, as an individual course. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE course approval period: December 16, 2025 - December 15, 2027. Social workers completing this course receive 9 total credits, including 3 Clinical and 6 Social and Cultural Competence continuing education credits.
